India EV Retail Sales Hit Record High in August 2026

Auto News · Market Data · Electric Vehicles
Every single EV category — two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, and commercial vehicles — posted its best-ever August. But the headline number hides an interesting wrinkle worth understanding before reading too much into it.
Data Released: September 8, 2026  |  Source: FADA (Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations)  |  Total EV Retail: 2,98,448 units

India’s electric vehicle retail sales hit an all-time August high of 2,98,448 units in 2026, up 52.9 percent year-on-year, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on September 8. Overall EV penetration — the share of electric vehicles among all vehicles sold — climbed to 12.3 percent, up from 9.5 percent in the same month last year. It’s a genuinely strong set of numbers, and one specific detail stands out: every single one of the four EV categories FADA tracks posted its best-ever August performance, with none lagging behind.

What FADA’s President Had to Say

“August 2026 was the biggest-ever August for electric mobility in India — EV retails across categories reached 2,98,448 units, up 52.9% year-on-year, taking overall EV penetration to 12.3%, from 9.5% a year ago. Remarkably, every one of the four EV categories set a fresh August record — there was not one that did not.”
— Sai Giridhar, President, FADA

That last line is worth sitting with. It’s one thing for an overall aggregate number to hit a record while individual segments underperform and get pulled up by an outlier — it’s a different, more genuinely encouraging story when literally every category is independently setting its own high, which is exactly what happened here.

Electric Two-Wheelers: Strong Growth, With an Honest Asterisk

Electric two-wheeler retail sales grew 67.05 percent year-on-year to 1,83,204 units in August — comfortably the largest segment by volume. But it’s worth being upfront about the fuller picture here: that same figure actually declined 10.35 percent compared to July’s 2,04,362 units. Segment penetration told a similar story, standing at 10.7 percent in August — meaningfully higher than the 7.7 percent recorded a year earlier, but a step down from July’s 11.2 percent.

Why the month-on-month dip isn’t necessarily bad news: A sequential decline right after a strong month isn’t unusual in India’s auto retail cycle, and Giridhar himself framed it in a genuinely positive light — noting that electric two-wheelers continued to maintain penetration above 10 percent even in a non-festive month. That’s actually a meaningful signal: sustaining double-digit penetration without the seasonal tailwind of festive buying suggests underlying demand has become more structural rather than purely event-driven.

On the two-wheeler leaderboard, TVS Motor retained its position at the top of the segment with 48,938 units sold in August, comfortably ahead of Bajaj Auto at 41,114 units and Ather Energy at 28,757 units. That ordering will look familiar to anyone who’s followed India’s EV two-wheeler market closely this year — TVS and Bajaj have consistently traded the top two spots, together accounting for a substantial share of the entire segment’s volume.

Electric Three-Wheelers: The Segment That’s Already Gone Electric

Electric three-wheeler sales increased 25.28 percent year-on-year to 79,846 units, though this segment too saw a sequential dip of 8.28 percent from July. What’s genuinely remarkable about this category is less the growth rate and more the sheer scale of adoption already achieved: EVs now account for 65.3 percent of all three-wheeler retail in India, up from 56.6 percent a year earlier. Unlike two-wheelers, cars, or commercial vehicles, the three-wheeler segment isn’t in the middle of an electric transition — it’s substantially already there, with electric models representing a clear majority of what’s actually being sold.

Electric Passenger Vehicles: Steady, Broadening Growth

Electric passenger vehicle sales rose 51.89 percent year-on-year to 30,696 units, with penetration improving to 7.6 percent from 5.8 percent a year earlier. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) remained the clear market leader with 13,158 units, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra at 6,464 units and JSW MG Motor India at 4,622 units — an ordering that’s held fairly steady across recent months as Tata continues to lean on its established EV lineup and dealer reach.

Perhaps the more interesting detail here is further down the list. Two genuinely new entrants to India’s EV passenger car market — VinFast Auto India and Tesla India Motors and Energy — retailed 2,199 and 116 units respectively in August. Those are still small numbers relative to the established players, but they represent real, counted retail sales from two brands that simply weren’t part of India’s EV passenger vehicle conversation a year or two ago, and their presence in this data at all is itself a small milestone worth noting.

Electric Commercial Vehicles: The Standout of the Month

If one category deserves to be singled out from August’s numbers, it’s this one. Electric commercial vehicles touched an all-time monthly high of 4,702 units — not just a record for August, but the single best month for the segment in FADA’s entire data series to date. Year-on-year growth came in at a striking 188.3 percent, nearly trebling the segment’s volume from a year earlier, while month-on-month growth was also strongly positive at 32.23 percent — meaning, unlike two-wheelers and three-wheelers, this segment didn’t just avoid a sequential dip, it accelerated further.

Why this segment matters more than its raw numbers suggest: Electric commercial vehicles now account for 5.18 percent of all commercial vehicle retail, up sharply from just 2.06 percent a year earlier. Giridhar attributed this specifically to fleet electrification moving “decisively from pilots to purchase orders” — in plainer terms, this suggests businesses that were previously testing electric trucks and vans in small numbers are now genuinely committing to buying them as part of standard fleet operations, rather than running limited trials.

Reading the Bigger Picture

Taken together, this data paints a picture of an EV market that’s maturing across the board rather than being carried by a single standout segment. Three-wheelers show what a genuinely completed electric transition looks like, with EVs now the clear majority choice. Commercial vehicles show what the early stages of that same transition can look like when it starts accelerating in earnest. And two-wheelers and passenger vehicles — the two largest and most closely watched segments — continue posting strong year-on-year growth even as month-to-month numbers naturally ebb and flow with seasonal buying patterns.

The overall penetration jump from 9.5 percent to 12.3 percent year-on-year is itself a meaningful signal. India’s EV market isn’t simply adding more electric vehicles in absolute terms — electric vehicles are also steadily claiming a larger share of every new vehicle sold in the country, month after month, which is ultimately the more important trend to watch over the medium term.
